Chapter 36

New York City, always moving and full of passion, found itself quieted by the morning rain that fell. The streets glistened with the reflection of headlights sweeping down 5th Avenue, Broadway, and Columbus Circle, everything mixing in with a steady stream of umbrellas in all different colors, and underneath them the souls who wanted to stay dry.

Right on time, Frandy pulled in front of the main entrance to BWM. He’d dropped Pyune off at the east entrance, with Linda waiting to take her to the photo shoot. Tess stepped out just as Frandy double-parked the limousine. He ran around to the other side of the car and opened the door for her. “Ah, Miss Starling. You are more beautiful today than yesterday.” He grinned wide, his pearl-white mouth vibrant next to his dark skin.

“Thank you, Frandy. Here’s my briefcase. Just put it up front with you.” She slid across the leather seat.

Frandy took her briefcase and got into the car. “Where to, Miss Starling?” he asked as he looked back at her and smiled.

“The usual drive to the country. And raise that glass, please. I’m going to rest awhile. And don’t sing too loudly—I can still hear you back here, even with the partition up.” She wasn’t smiling.

“Yes, ma’am. Frandy is going to be quiet like a little mouse…or even as quiet as a snake. You know that’s why I don’t like snakes. They don’t bark, they don’t peep…they be too quiet for Frandy. I wish a snake would just make a little noise when it slides along, you know when it sticks its tongue out, it could go hissssss real loud and—”

“Frandy! Raise the glass!”

The partition slid upward, and Tess closed her eyes for the half-hour ride to Mount Vernon. Frandy sped past the Time-Warner Center on Columbus Circle. He didn’t need directions; he’d made the trip many times before.

Tess was very tired. There had been little sleep for her after Pyune’s cocktail reception. She’d gone to bed around midnight but had tossed and turned until her alarm clock sounded at 5 a.m. At least Robert would be flying back today, and his presence would add a little calm to her life. A life that had been rather settled until the phone call from Linda the day before: “Miss Starling, can you meet at three to discuss a very important matter?” Tess had no idea the very important matter would be about Pyune EverSweet Murphy, a woman who was more than the winner of the Bakers’ World Magazine grand prize. A lot more. She was her identical twin sister. This only happened in movies.

At four in the morning it had come to her. Just a simple statement Pyune had made: “I never knew my daddy. Mama said he fell off the side of the mountain when hunting for a hog that had gone missing.” Pyune said that her mama had seen buzzards flying in circles above a sheer drop-off near their shack of a house, and she just knew it was Vernon they were hovering over.
